In other words, anything can be "perceived as an insult," especially over the internet where it is very difficult to tell the true intentions of others (no body language, facial expressions, etc.). Flashing this emote of a spear (and whatever else) gouging into the corpse of an enemy you just gouged with a spear (or whatever else) to make into a corpse really doesn't sound insulting, or even taunting. It sounds like you're trying to make sure they're dead. It sounds like a bit of fun in the moment. It sounds almost RP - not insulting, all in good fun.
well no...maybe if you have issues with how you look but how would someone whos never seen you even know, therefore how could you possibly feel insulted, even if you might perceive it as an insult.

its like people saying shit like "your dad is gay!" or whatever, yes its an insult but hey...

Ranking is perceived as an insult because since day one the general consensus ingame has been that ranking over a dead body is an insult.

i didnt make that up, its just the way it came to be. now you can say what you like about it being justified or logical or whatever its a FACT. Even Anet clued up to it.

looks like they changed their minds about it but its a bit too late now no?

just saying that sheesh.

Ranking is percieved as an insult because PvE players get trashed in PvP and get feel spited that they are unable to get that flashy emote that just danced over their corpse.

I don't think any serious PvP player has ever actually taken it as much more than a joke, simmilar to playful pre-match banter. I remeber [FoSa], one of the first big tombs guilds to get into GvG, used to full-team tiger rank dead Guild Lords. It was pretty funny, and nobody got mad about it.

Get real, get a grip, lighten up. This is a game. It greatly amuses me that the only people complaining about ranking being bad sportsmanship are people who have never been seriously involved in PvP in the first place. Why exactly do you care?

Many only consider it an insult because they're already angry for losing. At that point, just about anything the enemy does could be construed as an insult. For some, even a simple and congratulatory "gg" could be an insult.

Just look at how many rage at others for trying to help by suggesting skills or giving price checks. They see those as insults because of their embarrassment for 'not getting it right,' and take it out on those trying to help.

Not saying that 'ranking' is trying to help, but it is just the victor's way of celebrating their kill. It's not greifing. It's not intentionally trying to ruin someone else's fun. It's simply people getting in the moment of an exciting battle and celebrating it. It's the emote version of saying "Woo! Take that!" While the corpse hears "You suck!"

It's amazing how they were able to come up with something cheaper (as in a cheap shot) than Rank spiking.

Never been playing in a sports team? Soccer, basketball? Went to Championships? Taunting the opponent or "insulting" him (real insults deserve punishment) is before the match, during the match and afterwards. It's omnipresent wherever you face competition and it's a natural part of it.

Yes, there are people that really do this to boost their little ego (which is what people generally fear here - humiliation by assholes) but better point with them and laugh because in the end there are other things that'll matter than stroking on the internets. Let's hope you end up better.

here we go with the pve bashing, something that has absolutely nothing to do with the subject at hand.

errr responding to the OP? "ANet is promoting bad behaviour?" thats all.

if i went to a local MTG tourney and some opponent started jeering or mouthing off and that was OK by tourney standards IE: you solve the problem on your own because there is no behavioral "rule" then i can tell you...that would be one SHORT tourney.

im not saying that Anet is promoting bad behavior, but the behavior its promoting is assimilated with bad behavior because it has been cast as such.

@ arcane, i totally hear what youre saying but it doent really matter what a minority thinks does it.
general perception is what counts in this case.

The intention/motivation to do something is as important as what you do.
"gg" is an insult, if for example everybody knows that it is not true. Then it is pity.

Helping someone, who didn´t asked for help, can be received as the message: "You are too stupid to do it on your own, let me help you!"

It has everything to do with the subject at hand. If not, please explain to me why PvE players are the only ones who are at all bothered by this being 'cheap' or 'insulting'?

That's hardly the point or goal, it was effectively ranking the entire opposing team.

Ok then, we can agree on that.

The behavior it is promoting has been cast as insulting by a certain group of rather silly people. Everyone else just sees it as a rather amusing addition to the game emotes.

Lets face it, this title doesn't even serve the same purpose as ranking someone. Ranking is about showing your supposed superiority "I'm a pro tombs player, therefore better than you". The Zaishen title doesn't have any kind of meaning like that, and therefore isn't going to be used in such a manner.

No, it is not a natural part of it. No matter how many times people try to say that, to justify their own behaviour as assholes.

Well....if you die in PvP then get /ranked and report them, that's a little more unsportsman like than /ranking someone for something so silly.
I highly doubt that people get even temp banned for that....but if they do for some odd reason, that is absolutely insane.

No?

Maybe the enemy team knew you would lose, but you did a much better job than they expected. That's still a good game.

Just over a year ago someone was temp banned for ranking over Andrew Patrick's corpse in GvG.

Now that's funny.

Mmmm... no. I gg every single match in all PvP areas (except AB because it usually doesn't occur to me for some reason). Never any malice or sarcasm intended.

The only exception is if they just give up. Then I just don't say anything. If you show up and try, it was a good game.

Nobody needs to be an asshole to taunt or to mock for fun.

No it doesn't and you can't explain what doesn't exist. But if you can without so much as a shred of fact, will you be my lawyer?

The only thing that sucks about this, is that anet introduced a whole new title, with its own emote, whilst theres no title for gladiator, champion or commander.

No, he was insinuating how Anet treated someone unfairly.

He's been the only known case of someone getting banned for /ranking.

You get this title by using Zaishen keys.

You get Zaishen keys by spending Balth Faction or Tournament Reward Points.

You can only get those by PvPing.

So... PvEers are going to have high ranks in this? Higher than the HA ranks they don't have? Really?

Maybe we should think things through a bit more before trolling along the riverside...
